A pair of white stained brown mens gloves, flesh side out, circa 1640 60 with integral gauntlet edged and lined with rose pink silk, and adorned with couched silver thread edging band further applied with purl wire coiling tendrils and foliage and raised satin stitched pansies in coloured silks, 30 cm long.

A fine pair of embroidered mens gauntlet gloves, circa 1615 25, of white doeskin stained buff, the gauntlets lined in salmon pink silk, worked in gold and silver purl wire and polished threads with griffins and camels, within arches and foliate scrolls, spangled with sequins, edged in silver and gold fringes with pink selvedge braid edge.

A pair of white stained cream doeskin leather gloves, circa 1600 1610, suede side up, with separately worked gauntlets with C scrolls, sunflower and carnations, in variously patterned couched gold threads, (the gold thread wrapped over a yellow silk core) with some blue floss silk detailing, three similarly worked gusset bands, edged in gold fringing spangled with sequins, lined in brown silk, decoratively couched roundel nand foliate bands outline the thumb, elongated fingers with delicately stitched seams, 33cm long excluding fringing.

Also illustrated in Gloves by Valerie Cumming, p.24. They are similar in style to catalogue number 23371.

A pair of gloves, circa 1650 70, of white leather dyed dark brown, flesh side out, with narrow angular gauntlet separately worked and applied, lined in pink silk, the gauntlets of elaborate gold and silver strip, forming large three dimensional medallions and florets, edged in gold fringing, 30 cm long.

An unusual pair of dark brown/aubergine ladies mittens. Probably English, late 17th century, of sheepskin leather, flesh side out, lined with remains of sheep fleece, with crudely stitched side seams, pointed finger guards, the finger slits below edged in white leather, the uppers applied with raised silver thread scrolling motifs, worked over parchment mounts. These are rare as they represent a form of comfortable non formal domestic mitten which so rarely survives.

A fine ribbon trimmed glove, circa 1660 80, wrist length of white doeskin, the hand section suede side up, the integral gauntlet showing the reverse, with pinked, scalloped edging and slashed stripes through which various shades and sizes of green ribbon and gauzes are threaded, the upper hand and fingers trimmed with ribbon rosettes, the whole adorned with decorative pinked/slashed patterns to aid ventilation, elongated fingers, 24 cm long. An embroidered gauntlet panel circa 1600, inset with satin panels embroidered with kingfishers and cranes within lavish couched silver and gold thread borders with raised floss silk florets and pea pods of couched silver and shaded green silk threads which open, the eight green tabs embroidered with moss green foliage and edged in spangled fringes, 36 cm long overall.

A single embroidered leather glove circa 1620 40, of white kid dyed grey, suede side uppermost, with integral gauntlet edged and lined in pink silk, trimmed with silver fringing, embroidered in split stitch in pink and yellow floss silks a pair of birds, red and blue coloured raised purl wire blossoms and gold strip quivers and stylised gold purl blooms with gold strip stems, elongated fingers and thumb with wrong sides together stab stitched, 32 cm long. An unusual ladies elbow-length gauntlet glove, the embroidered gauntlet circa 1600 1620 of white stained grey leather doeskin flesh side up, the separately applied linen gauntlet worked in buttonhole stitch with vividly coloured carnations and leaves, couched silk and gold threads form bunches of grapes, plaits of gold thread form linking tendrils, 39cm long.
The gauntlet is of a type of English domestic embroidery found as cuffs on womens jackets and bodices see the V & A collection Margaret Latons bodice. The gauntlet could have been made in this form or could have been added to a long glove in the later 17th Century when long gloves were more popular.

A pair of knitted cotton and embroidered gloves, mid-late 17th century, embroidered in crimson silks and silver threads with angular bands and small curling tendrils, 27 cm long, Although these are inventoried as 19th century and appeared in Connoisseur in 1919, p.87 as Eastern European, Greek work, the design and colour suggests to KTB Italian mid 17th century. The cardinal-pink silks suggest a liturgical use.

A single knitted silk glove, probably Italian, second half of 17th century, of pale green silk and gold threads, lined with matching plain silk fabric, with slightly angular gauntlet knitted with gold diagonal bands and medallions (similar to 23407), and IHS emblem within flame medallion, narrow gilt stripes to the fingers, 25 cm long, applied with two red wax seals which appear to be papal seals, possibly denoting that this glove may have been worn by a Pope.

A knitted liturgical mens glove, second half 17th century, of yellow silk/cotton mix embellished with gold thread, angular gauntlet with small repeats within specially shaped gauntlet borders, large crucifix within octagonal medallion which is also outlined in gold chain stitch, gold embroidery also outlines the fingers and thumb, the gauntlet is lined in pale yellow silk, the edges and bracelet are trimmed with gold stip and scallop form bobbin lace, 30 cm long. The original colour of the glove was purple but light damage and soiling have caused the dye to change colour.

Pair of knitted liturgical silk mens gloves, late 17th early 18th century, probably Italian, knitted in lime green, pale pink and silver-gilt thread, on a cream ground with details in mauve, yellow and blue, with large central imperial crown above a cruciform and IHS symbol, chalices, ladders and thorny boughs, the colourful upper section bearing the initials AN, the colourful lower section with LIS, N, AVX, the rear gauntlet with BJ, ASA A, below the thumb is a golden heart pierced with arrows and the initials IE, SUSC, ORDIS, ME, Y, both gloves bearing the same initials, but one with the letters reversed in the upper section of the gloves, edged in silver bobbin lace.

A pair of knitted silk/cotton elbow length finger-less ladies mittens, late 17th early 18th century, with separately worked thumb section, the arm section knitted in the round, worked in pink and green with bold flowering plant sprouting carnations, honeysuckle amid small birds and the initials MX, RS, RM, RI M, the other hand initialled HN, PF, RI, M, blue zig-zag bracelet band and outer cuff band, the plain hand sections with seam at thumb and side, 32 cm long.(although one side of the hand has a fully cast off section, the upper half does not which suggests that they originally had peaked finger covers which were removed, adapted).
